book 1:
- The Austrian horses glinted in the moonlight
- Taking it with both hands, Alek strained harder, until the massive armored visor grudgingly closed a few centimeters
- It didn't stop to squawk orders at the lowly midshipmen, but flitted past on tis way up to the spine
- Fitzroy was in charge here; it was Deryn's job to prepare the boffin's cargo for loading
- But the eggs just sat there, not answering at all.

book 2:
- Far out in the uncharted backwaters of the unfashionable end of the Western Spiral arm of the Galaxy lies a small unregarded yellow sun.
- Ford scrambled round and flung his shoulder uselessly against the reclosing hatchway.
- There did, however, remain the question of both the mysterious sixty thousand Altairian dollars paid yearly into his Brantisvogan back account, and of course Zaphod Beeblebrox's highly profitable secondhand ballpoint business.
- They are all that remains of the greatest experiment ever conducted - to find the Ultimate Question and the Ultimate Answer of Life, the Universe and Everything.
- He put on a little light music instead.

book 3:
- Everything starts somewhere, although many physicists disagree.
- The scraping became louder, and was followed by a moment of silence and then a clang as something landed in the ashes and knocked over a set of ornamental fire irons.
- Where was I... yes... the shops'll be open late.
- Was it him, or was this knee he was sitting on a lot bonier than it should be?
- After a while, it began to melt in the sun.

book 4:
- In 1815 Monsieur Charles-Francois-Bienvenu Myriel was Bishop of Digne.
- This was plain from the complete absence of young priests around him.
- He waited a moment, then pushed the door again more firmly.
- The most ferocious animals are disarmed by caresses to their young.
- Comme la nuit se fait lorsque le jour s'en va.
